The market skipped Sword & Shield: a booster box from every set in the era costs $8,022, down 9% since June, while the same run of Sun & Moon boxes costs $33,868, up 7%
Chase Society priced one booster box from every set in each Pokémon era on June 24 and again on October 14. The Sword & Shield run, the sets released from February 2020 to Crown Zenith in January 2023, fell from $8,838 to $8,022, a 9% drop in sixteen weeks. The Sun & Moon run before it rose from $31,780 to $33,868, up 7%, with eleven of its twelve boxes higher. The XY run rose from $22,432 to $24,054, also up 7%. The first eight Scarlet & Violet sets, the current era, fell from $2,852 to $2,656, down 7%.
These are Chase Society's tracked market prices for sealed boxes, not completed sales, so none of them goes to our ledger. They are the same series that produced Chase Society's October 13 column on the thinnest month for Pokémon sealed in the eighteen months it has tracked the category: 7 of 124 boxes, ETBs and bundles up 5% or more over 30 days, 51 down.
The four eras, one box per set
| Era | June 24 | Oct 14 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| XY (2014–2016) | $22,432 | $24,054 | +7% |
| Sun & Moon (2017–2019) | $31,780 | $33,868 | +7% |
| Sword & Shield (2020–2023) | $8,838 | $8,022 | −9% |
| Scarlet & Violet, first eight sets | $2,852 | $2,656 | −7% |
The Sun & Moon run now costs more than four times the Sword & Shield run. Both eras are complete and both are out of print; the gap is in what the market thinks of the supply.
Where Sword & Shield lost it
Evolving Skies, the era's chase box because of the Umbreon VMAX alternate art, fell from $2,682 to $2,238, down 17%. It is still $52 above its first price of 2026, $2,186, and $73 under the $2,311 Chase Society printed on September 30, so the box has given back its summer and not much more. Fusion Strike fell from $1,109 to $974, down 12%, and Brilliant Stars from $626 to $559, down 11%.
Evolving Skies alone is $2,238 of the era's $8,022, or 28% of the run. Strip it out and the other Sword & Shield boxes together cost about $5,800, less than the Unified Minds box on its own.
The era's chase cards moved the same way. Chase Society lists the Umbreon VMAX alternate art at $1,855 from $2,038, the Lugia V alternate art at $440 from $516 and the Giratina VSTAR GG69 at $267 from $372; the Gengar VMAX alternate art went the other way, $838 from $761. The Crown Zenith ETB Plus is at $531 from $586.
Where Sun & Moon gained it
Unified Minds rose from $2,680 to $3,240, up 21%, and Crimson Invasion from $560 to $677, also up 21%. Cosmic Eclipse went from $3,844 to $4,217, up 10%, and Team Up from $11,333 to $11,650. Team Up alone, at $11,650, now costs more than the entire Sword & Shield run.
The print run behind the gap
Chase Society's piece cites Fortune's figure of 9 billion Pokémon cards printed between March 2021 and March 2022, the twelve months that covered Chilling Reign, Evolving Skies, Fusion Strike, Brilliant Stars and Astral Radiance. The Pokémon Company printed into the 2021 demand spike, and the boxes from those sets are the ones the market has repriced lowest since June. Sun & Moon and XY were printed before the spike and are the runs that rose.
The era is not uniform. Evolving Skies holds a premium that the rest of Sword & Shield does not, and the market is paying it for one card's alternate art rather than for the set. The 9% era-wide decline is the average of a chase box giving back its summer and the rest of the run drifting lower from a low base.
What it means for the market
Across the four eras, the pattern since June is age and print size: the two older, smaller-print eras rose 7%, the two newer, larger-print eras fell 7% to 9%. Chase Society's October 13 count of 7 risers out of 124 tracked products says the same thing from the other direction. The next data point is Delta Reign on November 6, the first Scarlet & Violet set to release into this market; Chase Society had its ETB at $122 from $133 and its box at $249 from $262 on October 13, before release.
