Three sealed Pokémon booster boxes topped $340,000 at Goldin, and Call of Legends made five times its May price
Three sealed Pokémon booster boxes sold for more than $340,000 each at Goldin on October 25, the night its Pokémon 30th Anniversary Auction closed, per Chase Society's weekly sales report (October 26). A 2004 EX Team Rocket Returns box of 36 packs led at $384,300 on 21 bids. A 2005 EX Deoxys box made $378,267 on 17 bids, and a 2011 Call of Legends box made $341,600 on 35 bids. A 2005 EX Unseen Forces box added $183,001 on 27 bids.
The sealed top five outside Goldin was one sale: a 2010 Master's Scroll Daisuki Club sealed item at $27,000 on eBay, per the same report. Every other slot belonged to the Goldin boxes.
Call of Legends had a comp, and it was five months old
The Call of Legends result is the one with a direct comparison. Chase Society notes that a Call of Legends box made $62,906 at Goldin in May, so the October price is about 5.4 times the last public sale at the same house. The 35 bids, the most of the four boxes, show the jump was contested.
The other boxes sit near the top public sealed price of the month. Chase Society points to Alt's sale of a Legendary Collection booster box for $381,000 about two weeks earlier, which puts EX Team Rocket Returns and EX Deoxys in the same band as the most-cited sealed comp of October.
Finished runs against the shelf
The report sets one more number beside these: a factory-sealed case of six Evolving Skies booster boxes made $14,200 on October 20. One 2004 box sold for about 27 times that case.
That gap is the same one Chase Society's in-print tracking has shown all month. Its October 27 Market Movers report has the 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box at $112, down from $173 in release week, while older sealed product with finished print runs is the side gaining: a Steam Siege booster box up 12% in 30 days, from $1,300 to $1,460, and an XY Roaring Skies box up 11%, from $4,281 to $4,768, per the same report. The boxes that set records at Goldin come from runs that ended about twenty years ago.
Why the EX era is pricing now
The EX boxes went up in a 30th-anniversary auction that put them in front of the bidders already spending on the Mudkip and Trophy Pikachu. A buyer of an EX Team Rocket Returns box is buying the chance at its Gold Star cards, which sold at Goldin the same night (a Gold Star Mudkip PSA 10 made $610,000, per Chase Society). When the graded singles from a set reprice, the sealed boxes that could produce them follow.
This is a read of where the premium sits, not a forecast. Four boxes in one evening at one house is a small sample, and the May Call of Legends comp shows how quickly the same box can sell at a very different number.
What to watch next
- Chase Society's weekly sealed tracking, for whether finished-run boxes hold October's gains.
- Delta Reign's November 6 release (Upcoming Releases), the next test of in-print pricing.
