TCGplayer passed $1 billion in a year and Goldin had a record quarter, eBay says
eBay's third-quarter report, released October 28, says TCGplayer passed $1 billion in gross merchandise volume over the trailing 12 months, per CollectiblesNews.com (October 28). In the same report eBay said Goldin, the high-end auction house it bought in 2024, posted record GMV for the quarter. eBay as a whole took $3.2 billion in revenue, up 14% from a year earlier, on $23.2 billion of GMV, up 15%.
Gross merchandise volume is the total value of goods sold through a marketplace, not the platform's revenue. So the $1 billion is what buyers spent on TCGplayer in a year, mostly on singles and sealed product for Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering and other card games.
What else changed in the quarter
eBay listed several collectibles moves in the report, per CollectiblesNews:
- TCGplayer is going international. It has started onboarding sellers in the UK and Canada.
- More cards go through authentication. eBay lowered the price thresholds at which trading cards must pass its Authenticity Guarantee, in both the US and the UK. Its program also now covers eligible coins in the US, through a partnership with PCGS.
- eBay Live keeps growing. The livestream selling business ran at what eBay called a multibillion-dollar annualized GMV, with year-over-year growth well into the triple digits.
- Goldin's record quarter included a 1776 Exeter Broadside of the Declaration of Independence at $3.65 million, the sale eBay highlighted.
eBay does not break out how much of its $23.2 billion came from collectibles. CollectiblesNews notes the category drew several of the report's most prominent mentions.
Why it matters for card collectors
One company now sees every tier of the card market. A raw single on TCGplayer, a graded card on eBay with authentication, a livestream break on eBay Live and a seven-figure lot at Goldin all report to the same owner. The records Goldin set in its Pokémon 30th Anniversary Auction on October 25, which ICv2 put at over $28 million with 18 record sales, land in the same company's numbers as a $5 single.
Lower authentication thresholds widen the verified middle. Every card pushed through authentication before it reaches a buyer adds a checked sale to the record. That matters most in the price band where fakes and swapped slabs have been a worry, and it gives comps in that band more weight.
International sellers deepen supply. UK and Canadian sellers on TCGplayer add stock to the same pool US buyers shop. For singles and sealed product priced off TCGplayer Market Price, more sellers is more data behind each price, and potentially more competition on price.
None of this is a forecast for card prices. Marketplace volume can rise because more items sell, because prices rise, or both, and eBay's report does not split those apart for TCGplayer.
What to watch next
- eBay's fourth-quarter report, which will cover the holiday season and the full effect of the authentication changes.
- Whether TCGplayer's international sellers show up in Market Price data for sealed Pokémon and Magic product.
- eBay's full-year guidance: revenue of $12.62 billion to $12.67 billion and GMV of $91.5 billion to $91.9 billion.
